i really enjoy this take on bear shifter's. I am not going to do spoiler's, but have to mention, this could easily be 5 strong stars for me but for one thing. Has to do about 3/4 in , what transpires with his older brother, I felt was so out of character. You'll have to read it and see if you agree. As something was building, i had it all figured out what was going to happen. But, nope I wasn't even close. Tongue in check.... my take was better...We get very passionate lovemaking - somewhat descriptive, but it all felt right because the author had me caring about our H/h. No cliffhanger, but I wanted an epilogue because i was so invested in this couple I wanted to know what their future held.
We do get a very satisfying HEA for all concern. It is rare that you have a strong Alpha male, who is caring and wears his heart on his sleeve, but never did I feel he wasn't strong. Our h was amazing, very strong in personality and caring. Our 3 main female character's were all looking for something and each found it.
I am not going into the the story because it has been explained. But this is a different take on shifter's and I really enjoyed the journey.

I have read two of Arianna Hawkes’s Christmas books and I loved them. “Bear in the Rough” is about Xander Silvester who had just returned home at the request of his father. Xander didn’t like that his father wanted to retire and he wanted Xander to take over instead of Maximus, his older brother. Of course Maximus didn’t like it and he wasn’t scared to let Xander know. The Broken Hills Bears are a wrestling clan, and Xander’s brother Maximus is very unhappy with Xander’s return. Maximus believes that he has been cheated out the Alpha position. Xander’s reign as Alpha is put to the test when his clan accidentally kidnaps three human females. Freya Wright is one of three females accidentally kidnapped by the clan. She finds that she has feelings for him, and yet she doesn’t like that he is keeping her and her friends against their will. She wants to go home, but she is drawn to Xander. Xander knows that Freya is his mate, but could she love him and want to stay? Freya has to decide if she belongs with Xander or in her own world. Can there be a future for Xander and Freya? This book is a recommended read. You will not be disappointed.

WOW !! AWESOME ..FANTASTIC READ....
it starts out with Xander's return to Broken Hill after 5 yrs being away in the Military..He is the second son of the Broken Hill Bears. His Dad and Xander felt the bear shifters needed to know more about the human race and how better to do that then to live among them as human.
Maximus who is Xander’s older brother and should have become the next Alpha but really has some issues. Through this book you wonder about the scars and what brought Maximus to the state of mind he was at. Maximus hates humans,as well as the Black Paw Ridge Bears ..and as older son he felt it was his right to be Alpha one day.
Freya is a wounded soul and wanted to go backpacking in the wilderness on the PCT..a very long trail...remember the movie called "Wild"..
Her two best friends were planning to go along with her and work thru their own wounds...but in truth her friends were not mentally or physically prepared to handle such a long backpacking trip. Marin wanted to see where her grandmother had traveled long ago..Eloise was going thru man troubles and seemed to never accomplish or complete much... All of them but especially Freya wanted to find peace and hope that this trip would indeed fill a hole that was deep inside them and for Freya ...from her father leaving years ago.
One rule the shifter community had was that humans were not ever too see a shifter shift.
but the humans knew about shifters go figure....They had wrestling matches between the Broken Hill Bears and the Black Paw Ridge Bears.
This fighting match is were Freya got to see "Xander the great" for the first time.
and There was a definate attraction and a pull between these two.
While the girls were hiking ..3 of the pack members unwittingly put the pack in danger by shifting in front of Freya and her friends .
What are these shifters to do, oh well they decide to kidnap the girls.
Things eventually get hot and steamy between Freya and Xander His bear calls out Mate but .... confusion set in for Freya for she does not want to have feelings for the one that is holding her captive. Xander wonders if Freya is strong enough to be his mate and this creates an inward war with his human/bear.
Really a great read but we are left wondering what became of Maximus? and how the clan finally rallied around the new Alpha ?..
but seriously a wonderful story ...
As usual Ms. Hawkes has done another FANTASTIC job.......
I truly enjoyed this book. If your looking for something with shifters and a bit of insta-lust, you'll like Bear in the Rough. The idea that three women that were looking to find themselves decided to take on the PCT was impressive. The friendship and encouragement was admirable.
On the shifter side of things the world they live in as a clan separate from humans was interesting. It cracked me up how crazy scared humans were of them, especially when most of them were big teddy bears.
I might have given this one four stars, but the author missed a few key things in her research of the words people from the US use. One of my biggest pet peeves.
