The discovery of a new planet, a paradise among the stars, is supposed to provide war-torn humanity with its last chance for survival. Unfortunately, it’s anything but the savior mankind so desperately needs. It’s the human race’s nemesis, an alien threat unleashed, one that has the power to harvest humanity when the collaboration of a sinister global sect tears down Earth’s defenses at the critical moment. The fate of mankind rests in the hands of two broken men who must overcome their own inner demons before they can take on the implacable force that lies in wait at the heart of Eden to destroy everything humans have ever known.
The Eden Paradox eBook Barry Kirwan
I read this book on a whim because it was recommended by Amazon. I will not get into a too detailed review - I am sure someone who is much better at cobbling words together will provide a lengthy recap with great plot details and insight - but here goes:Essentially the world is becoming uninhabitable due to interplanetary war, drought, famine, etc. The book is not really about the wars but some details are addressed to support the story. It is about a small group of people/beings that have been manipulating societies for hundreds of years to make the planet uninhabitable.
These folks have partnered with an interplanetary race (Q'Roths) who want to use the human life-force for their next generation. The plan is to have pioneer humans leave Earth to go to Eden, where the Q'Roth eggs are waiting. The "babies" will feed on the human pioneers and zip back to Earth to finish feeding. A hatched Q'Roth with consume ~100 humans life force as part of its development.
While this is a series, there is a nice closure to end this part of the story - no "Who shot JR?" cliffhanger!

The Eden Paradox eBook Barry Kirwan Reviews
This is really a review of the two Eden books by Mr. Kirwan so far, both of which I found impossible to put down. His imagination is amazing and wide ranging, his story is a consistent and constantly interesting one, and the characters in it are memorable, to say the least. And very different. His premise on what triggers humans to seek refuge elsewhere is believable based on our world and our species, and the old cliche "be careful what you wish for" is what the novels essentially explore. Some of it is reminiscent of other science fiction books, films and TV shows (echoes of "Aliens," "Star Trek," "Outer Limits"), but his takes are unique, as is his synthesis. I am really looking forward to the third book, and unreservedly recommend the first two.
I purchased this book since it had favorable ratings on and then subsequently purchased the next two in the triology. This book can stand alone; however, once I read it, I wanted to keep reading. I am an avid Sci-Fi reader and like the "hard" science fiction in particular but really enjoy SF that I wouldn't consider "hard" if it is thought-provocing, which I consider this book and series.
This book/series has an entertaining plot and well developed characters without being overly complicated. I really enjoyed the well developed political and religious drama while reading through the trials and tribulations of homo sapiens trying to preserve through a near apocolypse only to find themselves at the bottom of the totem pole with different factions of humans trying to get on leg up. I also appreciate the ironic sub plot of the legal and criminal justice system.
These were the first books I have ready by Barry Kirwan and they will not be the last!
Bought this for a cross-country plane trip. First of all, it lasted me about ten hours getting me there and most of the way back. I had no desire to read anything else in the midst of this dystopia/sci-fi novel, and even found myself thinking about the story while on vacation doing other things. This is Orson Scott Card quality material at half the price and with double the words. Hard to beat that. The action was well-paced and the plot moved fluidly from beginning to end. Like Card, some of the less developed characters could slip into cliche, but the rest of the story was so well crafted, this didn't really detract. I won't expound on the plot that is already laid out in the editorial review and product description, other than to say this is the type of story that can be very very poor or exceptional. Luckily, Kirwan falls into the latter category. Gladly recommend this book to any sci-fi lover out there.
This is one of the best self-published books from that I've ever read. It is the best work of science fiction, self-published or not, that I've read all year. This would be a five-star book anywhere. It's probably closer to six stars. Everything is top-notch. The writing, the editing, the characterization, the setting, all outstanding.
This is the part of the review where I point out where the author went wrong, what needs improvement, make some comments that at least I think are funny . . . I have nothing to put here. There is nothing wrong with this book.
If you like science fiction, buy this book now.
I wasn’t sure what to expect from Barry Kirwan’s Eden Paradox when I took a chance and bought a copy, but as a fan of Iain M Banks Culture series I am fond of a good sci-fi series so went into this with no expectations but big hopes. Well, if Kirwan is to live up to the Banks level of awesomeness only time will tell but I did really enjoy this book. The science elements are detailed and thorough and the characters fit perfectly with the plot and background. There is a good closure point at the end as well which encourages reading book 2, but I had already decided long before that I would be reading them all.
Faced with the fundamental need to survive, humanity reaches out searching for a planet to save them from a decimated Earth. The Eden Paradox is an interesting story about external conflict in the shape of mankind’s nemesis in the form of an alien race, and the inner conflict facing protagonists Micah and Blake. Reading about the author’s background in psychology I figure this may be one of the reasons he can so capably build strong foundations of their inner workings, but however he does it it definitely works. More please.
